Wyoming SSI Income and Resource Limits 2026

The 2026 Federal Numbers That Apply in Wyoming

SSI limits are set federally, but how they interact with Wyoming's state programs creates a picture that's more nuanced than the basic federal tables suggest.

Federal Benefit Rate: $994 per month for individuals, $1,491 for couples where both are eligible. This is the maximum SSI cash payment before any income-based reductions.

Resource limit: $2,000 for individuals, $3,000 for couples. Countable resources include bank accounts, cash, stocks, and most things that could be converted to cash. Your home, one vehicle, household goods, and burial plots are excluded. WYABLE account balances up to $100,000 are also excluded.

Substantial Gainful Activity: $1,690 per month for non-blind individuals, $2,830 for blind individuals. SSA considers whether work is at or above this threshold as part of the adult disability evaluation. For current SSDI beneficiaries, exceeding SGA during a Trial Work Period doesn't immediately affect payments.

General income exclusion: The first $20 of any unearned income per month is excluded from the SSI calculation. The first $65 of earned income plus half the remainder is also excluded.

Wyoming's State Supplement

Wyoming administers an Optional State Supplement through the Department of Family Services. The supplement is paid only to SSI recipients whose sole income source is SSI — any other countable income reduces the state supplement to zero first, before touching the federal payment.

The supplement adds approximately $20 per month for individuals in standard living arrangements. It's calculated automatically from SSA's computerized data files and deposited alongside the federal payment. No separate application is needed, and most recipients don't even realize it's a distinct payment.

The supplement applies to recipients in Code A living arrangements (independent living) or Code B (living in the household of another). If you're living in a Medicaid-funded facility, the supplement doesn't apply.

Income Rules That Trip Up Wyoming Families

In-Kind Support and Maintenance: If your adult child lives in your home without paying their share of shelter costs, SSA counts the shelter benefit as in-kind income. Under the Value of the One-Third Reduction rule, this drops the monthly payment from $994 to $662.67 — a loss of $331.33 every month. Food is now excluded from ISM calculations, so only shelter-related expenses (rent, mortgage, property taxes, utilities, water, sewerage, garbage) count.

The fix: a written room-and-board agreement where the individual pays their pro-rata share of household shelter expenses. Divide total shelter costs by the number of household members. If a household of four has $1,400 in monthly shelter expenses, the individual's share is $350. Paying that amount from SSI funds preserves the full $994 benefit.

Student Earned Income Exclusion: Students under 22 who are regularly attending school can exclude a limited amount of earned income before SSI applies its standard income calculation. The amount changes, so verify the current-year SSA limit before relying on it. This is on top of the standard $65 + half exclusion. For Wyoming students in transition from high school, this means they can work part-time without losing SSI.

Earned income exclusion: After the $65 disregard, SSA only counts half of remaining earned income. An individual earning $1,200 per month would have a countable earned income of ($1,200 - $65) / 2 = $567.50. After the $20 general exclusion applied first to unearned income, the SSI reduction from working is significantly less than the gross paycheck.

The $2,982 Number and Why It Matters

Wyoming's Medicaid Long-Term Care income standard is $2,982 per month — exactly 300% of the federal benefit rate. This cap applies to both institutional Medicaid and HCBS waiver eligibility.

It's also the unearned income ceiling for the Employed Individuals with Disabilities program. If your adult child's combined unearned income (SSI, DAC benefits, any other non-work income) stays below $2,982, they can work and earn any amount while keeping Medicaid through EID. The premium is 7.5% of total gross income minus $50.
