What the SSI Age-18 Redetermination Actually Is

Your child's SSI check does not automatically continue when they turn 18. The Social Security Administration treats the 18th birthday as a trigger for a brand-new medical evaluation under adult disability standards — not a simple renewal of the existing childhood claim.

During childhood, SSI eligibility uses the "marked and severe functional limitations" standard. The adult standard is different: the SSA asks whether your child can engage in any Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) — earning more than $1,690 per month in 2026 — due to a medically determinable impairment expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. Roughly one-third of childhood SSI recipients are initially denied during this review.

The good news: parental deeming ends at 18. The SSA no longer counts your income or assets against your child's eligibility. Even if your household income previously disqualified your child, they may now qualify on their own — their individual asset limit is $2,000.

Focus your descriptions on concrete functional limitations rather than diagnostic labels. The SSA evaluates what your child cannot do, not what their diagnosis is called. Detail specific deficits in executive functioning, sensory processing, communication, social interaction, and self-care. Describe how these affect a full 8-hour workday, five days a week — not just occasional challenges.

Collect recent medical records from every treating provider. The SSA weighs evidence from treating sources heavily, but gaps in the record create doubt. If your child has not seen a specialist recently, schedule an appointment before the review.

What Happens to Medicaid During the Review

South Dakota is a 1634 state, meaning SSI approval automatically triggers Medicaid coverage. During the review, monitor SSA and DSS notices and be ready to address any change in eligibility.

If SSI is ultimately denied, Medicaid may continue for a limited period depending on your child's individual circumstances and any appeal you file. Act quickly if you receive a denial: you have 60 days to file a reconsideration, and you should contact SSA promptly about whether continued payments are available during the appeal.

The Timeline in Practice

The full redetermination process varies from case to case. During the review, follow SSA's notices about whether the current SSI payment continues.

A decision will arrive by mail. If approved, nothing changes — the SSI check continues under adult rules. If denied, the denial letter explains the specific reasons and outlines your appeal options.
